2000年，國務(wù)院正式批復(fù)中國記協(xié)《關(guān)于確定“記者節(jié)”具體日期的請示》，同意將中國記協(xié)的成立日11月8日定為記者節(jié)。記者節(jié)像護士節(jié)、教師節(jié)一樣，是我國僅有的三個行業(yè)性節(jié)日之一。按照國務(wù)院的規(guī)定，記者節(jié)是一個不放假的工作節(jié)日。
新中國成立前就有記者節(jié)。從1933年到1949年，每年的9月1日，新聞從業(yè)人員都舉行各種儀式紀(jì)念這一節(jié)日。
1949年12月23日，中華人民共和國政務(wù)院頒布的《全國年節(jié)及紀(jì)念日放假辦法》中明確規(guī)定了“記者節(jié)”，《辦法》對年節(jié)和紀(jì)念日放假規(guī)定這樣表述：“其他各種紀(jì)念節(jié)日如：二七紀(jì)念、五卅紀(jì)念、七七抗戰(zhàn)紀(jì)念、八一五抗戰(zhàn)勝利紀(jì)念、九一八紀(jì)念、護士節(jié)、教師節(jié)、記者節(jié)等，均不必放假�！钡驗楫�(dāng)時沒有確定具體日期，pincai.com因此長期以來中國新聞從業(yè)人員一直未過記者節(jié)。 1999年9月18日頒布的《 全國年節(jié)及紀(jì)念日放假辦法》，再一次明確列入了記者節(jié)。2000年8月，國務(wù)院正式批復(fù)中國記協(xié)的請示，同意將11月8日定為記者節(jié)。
11月8日也是中國記協(xié)的成立日。1937年11月8日，以范長江為首的左翼新聞工作者在上海成立中國青年記者協(xié)會，這是中國記協(xié)的前身。
